Clinical Skills

SimLab

The SimLab experiences in Block 3 and 4 allow all Physios to do hands-on mock codes in a team setting on high-fidelity manikins. These real-life scenarios help integrate important concepts of pathophysiology within multiple body systems as well as giving opportunities for patient assessment, EKG interpretation, prioritization of care and other aspects of patient management.

Having the ability to practice multiple clinical scenarios and receive feedback from faculty and peers before being presented with a real-life medical scenario is invaluable for understanding your strengths and weaknesses. I personally feel like being able to practice multiple scenarios will help me gain confidence in how to evaluate a patient and make the right decisions regarding their diagnosis and what steps to take to treat them

I actually did enjoy being in the SimLab ‘hot seat’ as Team Leader because it put me in a spot where I was confronted with scenarios where I didn’t know what the next step was. Having the other members bring up what to do next was a very cool integration of textbook practice and real world experience, which I really enjoyed.

Clinical Skills Sessions

We have implemented multiple hands-on skills sessions into our curriculum. All Physios have the opportunity to do basic suturing and place IV cannulas during these important yet fun skills labs.

Students practice a clinical technique on patches of fake flesh.

I love learning clinical skills well in advance before I would need to use them in a clinical setting. Getting exposure to these skills early in a low stress environment where there isn’t any immediate pressure to perform helps with being able to completely focus on learning the actual skill.

This is also an opportunity for Physios to informally meet with military recruiting personnel and learn about the important resources available through the Health Professions Scholarship Program.

Learning more about the military army physician program was very interesting and something that I had not considered before. This certainly interested me because of some of the benefits that went along with it, such as the compensation and experiences that could be gained from being in this program. It is definitely something that I will look into in the future!
