SMP Community Outreach
Each year our Physios make an impact in the D.C. community, individually and as a group. This page catalogs some of our recent experiences.
Clinical and Service Opportunities
SMP Clinical & Service Director Holly Frost outlines some of the community service and clinical activities that help Georgetown students prepare for medical school.
Wheel 2 Win
Hani Annabi (SMP ’18) came to his Team Leader (Dr. Myers) with an idea born from his work with disabled persons and wheelchair basketball events. He asked if the SMP could partner with the United Spinal Association and the National Rehabilitation Hospital to put on a tournament to benefit those institutions. Dr. Myers brought our director of community outreach, Holly Frost, and the director of Yates Field House, Meg Dimsa, into the discussion, and soon the enthusiasm for the project was overwhelming.
Despite the academic workload, committees were organized, sponsors brought on board and teams were registered, culminating in an amazing inaugural day of wheelchair basketball on Sunday, February 25, 2018. Over 20 teams competed (four SMP teams played!) and everyone had a terrific time. The event helped bring home the idea of “walking in another’s shoes.” We thank Hani, Ryan, Holly, Meg, and the myriad of Physios who helped make this event spectacular and create another wonderful legacy for the SMP. Kudos to all of you!
Hoyas for Hearts
In conjunction with DC government, SMPs were trained to teach CPR and the Heimlich maneuver to D.C. residents as part an initiative to have the entire city trained in basic lifesaving. The Physios have already been commended for their huge impact, training thousands of residents. Go Physios! Hoya Saxa!
Shoe Drive
SMP students Chris, Jeff, Peter and Adrian (the Physio Shoe Bros), working with the Medical Ministry, started a shoe drive and in two weeks were able to collect 153 pairs in good condition to be distributed to those in need in the D.C. area. Good to see the Hoya willingness to help others.
Pumpkins for Kids
We decorated pumpkins for the kids in Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. Not clear whether Physios or kids were happier!
Best Buddies Friendship Walk
SMPs volunteer each year with the Best Buddies Fundraising Gala and the Friendship Walk on the National Mall. The students always have fun and its a great event to support inclusion.
